We were so honored to be part of your festival last year and really enjoyed coming out to the screening. Overall, SMUGGLED did extremely well on the film festival circuit, ultimately winning 5 awards and having 15 official selections – and receiving quality press coverage, including a feature article by NBCLatino. I wanted to let you know that this week, the film will be released on Vimeo for VOD viewing and we are planning to follow that with a special DVD release at the end of the month or in early April.

Jarden en el Mar (Garden in the Sea)

Garden in the Sea has to do with art and water also but in a more concrete and unusual capacity. It traces the journey of Spanish artist, Cristina Iglesias, as she is commissioned to construct an underwater sculpture deep in the Mexican Sea of Cortez. She envisions a tower like set of panels which tell a story drawn from the writings of a 16th century missionary and naturalist, Fr. Jose De Acosta while also alluding to the watery lost empire of Atlantis. Iglesias’ attempt was to fuse art and ecology into something truly unique. The underwater photography is gritty and raw and immerses and drowns the viewer. The background music is ethereal conjuring a meditative mood. Observing what the sea has done to her work as it claims it, is wondrous. Schools of fish shimmer through and various seabound creatures cling tenaciously to the walls. It becomes a submerged mystical maze.

Adapted from a monologue from the stage play by Ron Elisha, this screening at SRIFF marks a homecoming of sorts for actor and director Daniela Flynn, who was born and raised in Sonoma County. Be it in sales, technology or real estate finance, she’s chased careers in Miami, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. It wasn’t until Liisa became a mother that she decided to stop chasing dollars and start taking photographs.
Having a child was enough to make her go for it. Juggling her responsibilities as a mother, military spouse and professional photographer, she tries to keep up with the images generated by her thought processes while negotiating the logistical challenges and emotional roller coasters that come with a deployed husband and career advancement. Beyond that is the ever-present torment of someone plagued with a vision and a need to capture the images in her mind. According to Plan A is a short, bi-lingual, coming-of-age film about an Indian engineer set around the recession of 2008-09 in Silicon Valley.
This is a non-cliched film about universal themes of hopes, ambitions and luck on a unique sub-culture in Silicon Valley, which is not usually depicted in cinema – that of the Indian engineers (of which there are thousands). The film’s goal is to depict Indians in a more realistic and non-cliched manner, which it succeeds at.

Chastised for her forbidden love for an Alldunn and shamed by her unadorned face, Halfie Claire runs away into the forest. For over twenty years the painter Miquel Barceló has spent long periods in Africa. There he learned to paint amidst termites and scorpions, before the heat dried the paint and the wind blew away his canvases. At the top of the Bandiagara cliff, Barceló and the choreographer Josef Nadj put on the performance “Paso Doble” and for the first time he reveals the secrets of his African studio.
