The Buena Vista Social Club of South East Europe and India, “Gypsy Spirit” is a superb musical journey following some of the world’s best virtuoso Gypsy musicians as they journey to India to uncover the roots of their music. Viennese-born Harri Stojka is one of the world’s most talented jazz musicians. His roots run deep: he comes from a Roma family of musicians, who hailed from Wallachia 150 years ago, and who instilled in him a passion for music at a very early age.
The search for roots is entirely appropriate for Harri Stojka, who belongs to one of the most nomadic peoples in the world. Thus, in 2010, Stojka and his Gypsy Swing Ensemble toured for five weeks in India and China. The highlight of that tour is the film “Gypsy Spirit” beautifully directed by Klaus Hundsbichler. The Austrian director takes us on a fascinating journey to India and back. Beautiful music, memorable characters, and a quest for origins resonate with all of us nowadays.
